A predominately Buddhist country,
Cambodia has a population of over 15 million. Cambodian citizens
consider themselves to be descendents of the ancient Khmer
Empire, a powerful kingdom that dominated Asia during the
middle ages.
The geography of Cambodia is shaped
by the Mekong River and Tonle Sap, which overflow into region's
fertile rice fields. A large proportion of Cambodia’s
economy is dependent of rice exports, as well as timber, rubber
and fish. The country is hot and humid during the dry season
with tropical monsoons during the rainy season.

Phnom Penh
Known as the Pearl of Asia, Phnom Penh is the capital city
of Cambodia. The city has a unusual mixture of Khmer and French
architecture all combining into a charming blend of Asian
exotica. Visitors to the city should see the Royal Palace,
the Silver Pagoda and the temples of Angkor. We have some
amazing Volunteer Cambodia placements on offer, ranging from
teaching and caring for children, to humanitarian tours where
volunteers can discover the forgotten delights of Cambodia.

The literacy rate in Cambodia, according to UNESCO, is below
70 per cent, making it among the bottom 50 countries in the
world for education. With renewed political stability since
1998, the country is more open than ever to people wanting
to make a difference. Recently, English has become Cambodia’s
official second language, this means English volunteers are
in especially high demand in this fascinating country. Residents
are very eager to learn English, so this project can be an
extremely rewarding experience.
