Sri Lanka or The Teardrop of India
was devastated by the Boxing Day tsunami. More than 30,000
people were killed with villages and livelihoods destroyed.
Although the country is recovering, some communities are still
without adequate shelter.
Volunteer projects are vital in rebuilding the Sri Lankan
coast-line. Humanitarian work projects such as teaching English
to locals, can help improve their future economic opportunities
for the future. There are also opportunities to set up income
generating programs and entertain children who have been orphaned
by the disaster. Other volunteer programs include supporting
the running of an elephant sanctuary, helping to rebuild the
turtle conservation project destroyed by the tsunami, or valuable
journalism experience in Colombo.
